Bubble Free Energy in Cosmological Phase Transitions
نویسنده
چکیده
Free energy as a function of temperature and the bubble radius is determined for spherical bubbles created in cosmological first order phase transitions. The phase transition is assumed to be driven by an order parameter (e.g. a Higgs field) with quartic potential. The definition of the bubble radius and the corresponding generalized, curvature-dependent surface tensions are discussed. In the free energy expansion in powers of the inverse radius, the coefficients of the curvature term and the constant term are also calculated. ∗Bitnet: IGNATIUS@FINUHCB

Bubble-Nucleation Rates for Cosmological Phase Transitions
We estimate bubble-nucleation rates for cosmological phase transitions. We concentrate on the evaluation of the pre-exponential factor, for which we give approximate analytical expressions. Our approach relies on the use of a real coarse-grained potential. The consistency of the calculation implies that the coarse-graining scale must be larger than the typical scale of the critical bubble. We s...
متن کاملA consistent approach to bubble-nucleation theory
We summarize recent work on the consistent calculation of bubble-nucleation rates. Our approach is based on the notion of a real coarse-grained potential. The bubble-nucleation rate is calculated through an expansion around the semiclassical saddle point associated with tunnelling. We resolve outstanding problems related to the convexity of the potential, the double-counting of the effect of fl...
متن کاملCosmological Phase Transitions *
In this lecture at a school for condensed matter physicists, I begin with basic concepts and tools for investigating phase transitions in quantum field theory. The very different roles of global and gauge symmetries in phase transitions will be elucidated. Among the important applications of the basic theory the thermodynamics of the electroweak transition is treated in detail, and the implicat...

We investigate phase transitions in three dimensional scalar matrix models, with special emphasis on complex 2×2 matrices. The universal equation of state for weak first order phase transitions is computed. We also study the coarse grained free energy. Its dependence on the coarse graining scale gives a quantitative criterion for the validity of the standard treatment of bubble nucleation.
متن کاملBubble-Nucleation Rates for Radiatively Induced First-Order Phase Transitions
We present a consistent calculation of bubble-nucleation rates in theories of two scalar fields. Our approach is based on the notion of a coarse-grained free energy that incorporates the effects of fluctuations with momenta above a given scale k. We establish the reliability of the method for a variety of two-scalar models and confirm the conclusions of previous studies in one-field theories: L...
